It's very simple: to type quickly, you need to type with all your fingers and avoid looking at the keyboard (otherwise, you'll spend twice as much time switching your eyes from the keyboard to the screen and back). Basically, you just need to remember which finger presses which key.
You'll find ready-made finger placement schemes in the books on speed typing, but many authors recommend to create your own scheme, as finger length may be different, placement and size of the keyboard can vary. However, the starting position is always the same. Touch typing requires constantly returning your fingers to the starting positions which is defined by the small tactile bumps on the F and J keys. Your index fingers should always return to these bumps. Therefore, in the starting position, your fingers will rest on ASDF and JKL keys. The first exercise you need to practice is quickly placing your hands on the keyboard and feeling these bumps with your index fingers.
In general, the key to success is consistent practice. In the books you'll find plenty of links to typing trainers for every taste. You can also create your own trainers. Just ask ChatGPT to create, for example, an HTML/JS program that randomly displays a letter and when pressed - displays the next one. Or ask it to create an HTML/JS program that displays a sentence that you must type without a single error, otherwise you'll have to start over. This, by the way, is another principle of speed typing: it's quicker to type more slowly without errors than to type faster but with constant corrections.
How do I remember the keys?
Most likely, you'll just memorize the main keys (ASDF and JKL) and also the QWERTY raw. Then, you need to create associations. For example: "the C key is located next to the F key and I press it with the same finger - it sounds like FC = Football Club". Take the time to write down all the letter-keys you need to remember in a column and write an association next to each one.
How do I touch-type numbers?
Most books teach how to position fingers on the ASDF and JKL keys and type letters around them. But how do you touch-type numbers and punctuation marks on the top row of keys? To do this, you need to learn a second starting position for your fingers. Unfortunately, there are no tactile marks on the numbers. Typically, it's recommended to use starting position 1234 and 5678, because the left hand can be positioned fairly precisely, while the right hand can be positioned next to it.
So, if you need to press, say, the number 7, you need to place BOTH hands on the numbers and press finger №7. If you need to press 9 or 0, you still need to first move both hands to the starting position and then move your right pinky to the right. Importantly, to type punctuation marks with your left hand, you need to learn to press Shift with your right hand.
