Or rather, it was until Anthropic introduced MCP or Model Context Protocol. This is the protocol that manages data exchange between LLM and your data sources - databases, APIs, IDEs and so on. Within this protocol, the model can connect to a database to process and analyze big data, write SQL queries, become the "brain" of a chatbot to make it smarter, automate routine tasks such as updating data in tables.
MCP server provides its own tools - that is, commands that LLM can execute via it. The list varies depending on the purpose: servers for working with databases and for application development will have different functionality.
Anyone can create their own MCP server or client - books and documentation are available to help. Many companies and open-source developers have already released many of them. So if you need an MCP to connect to Postgres, look for the Postgres release. You can even choose the installation method that suits you best: on-premises or in the cloud.
