Mendeley, the research article management software, has added new AI features. When you're given a new article to read, the Reading Assistant helps you navigate it by providing an overview of its purpose, key points and structure. As your library grows, literature review becomes less about collecting articles and more about understanding how they relate to one another. The Ask My Library feature helps you work with saved PDFs to find relevant articles and identify connections between them. Research projects often span long periods, making it difficult to maintain context over time. The AI assistant can help you quickly familiarize yourself with key articles and find sources relevant to your current stage of research.

Draft2Digital and Bookshop.org announced a new partnership that makes hundreds of thousands of independent ebooks from indie authors distributed through Draft2Digital now available on Bookshop.org's rapidly growing ebook platform, with the partnership expected to grow to over a million titles as it expands. For the first time, the fastest-growing segment of publishing is directly providing a sustainable digital revenue stream for local bookstores. Draft2Digital supports over 330,000 authors worldwide and has helped generate over $500 million in ebook sales. Some experts believe this ecosystem is home to low-quality books (including those written by AI) that are impossible to publish with any major publisher and could significantly pollute Bookshop.org.

CLZ Books Web now features reading history tracking. It allows you to not only mark books as read but also track multiple reading sessions, enter both start and end dates and even track your reading progress, i.e., the number of pages read out of the total. You can also use folders to group by reader, reading status, year read, month read or reading date to get a good overview of which books you or someone else in your family is reading, finished or abandoned during each period. Your full reading history is displayed in a separate section on the book details panel, as well as in the new "Reading Statistics" section. The developers have also added intelligent automation settings for starting and ending a reading event. You can fine-tune what CLZ Books Web does when adding a new reading event or setting the status to "Completed." For example, you can allow the end date to be automatically populated when setting the status to "Completed."

Recent decisions by San Diego Comic-Con and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) illustrate the depth of opposition to AI within creative communities. In its new Nebula Awards guidelines, SFWA stipulated that works created in whole or in part by artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible for submission. The annual San Diego Comic-Con convention also amended its guidelines, now stating: "Submissions generated in whole or in part by artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible for submission." It's likely safe to assume that other organizations will announce similarly strong stances this year and that these communities will continue to discuss broader issues.

Instapaper, the service for delayed reading of online articles, has announced that the "Send to Kindle" feature is now available only to subscribers of the paid Instapaper Premium plan. A representative stated that creating Kindle digests is a resource-intensive process. It involves parsing numerous articles, downloading images for each article, burning everything to disk, creating an ePub file and sending it to Kindle email address. As the number of subscribers grew, creating Kindle digests became more expensive for everyone and the service had been operating at a loss for some time. Instapaper Premium costs $5.99 per month.

Starting January 20, 2026, Amazon allowed users to download DRM-free Kindle books in EPUB and PDF formats (but only if the author has enabled this option in Kindle Direct Publishing). To do this, you need to visit the "Manage Your Content and Devices" page on your Amazon account. Only verified buyers will be able to access EPUB/PDF files and this option is not available to Kindle Unlimited subscribers. Previously, even if authors uploaded DRM-free ebooks, Amazon still encrypted them in KFX format, making it impossible to download them to alternative e-readers such as Kobo or Pocketbook.
