2026. Science fiction writers, Comic-Con defend against AI

Recent decisions by San Diego Comic-Con and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) illustrate the depth of opposition to AI within creative communities. In its new Nebula Awards guidelines, SFWA stipulated that works created in whole or in part by artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible for submission. The annual San Diego Comic-Con convention also amended its guidelines, now stating: "Submissions generated in whole or in part by artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible for submission." It's likely safe to assume that other organizations will announce similarly strong stances this year and that these communities will continue to discuss broader issues.

2026. HarperCollins is using AI for book translations

Harlequin, a publisher specializing in romance literature, is now using artificial intelligence to translate books from English to French and all its in-house translators have been laid off. The company is confident that the average romance reader won't even notice that the books were translated by AI. The publisher doesn't use its own internal AI tool, but has outsourced it to Fluent Planet, a company that develops AI-powered translation tools. As a reminder, Dutch publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning recently began testing AI for translation tasks. And Kindle Direct Publishing expanded its AI translation service at the end of 2025, offering free automated translations for independent authors.

2025. Youbooks - AI non-fiction book generator

Youbooks is a new service for creating professional non-fiction books. How is it different from the usual ChatGPT and why non-fiction? The developers say that it combines the benefits of several AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Llama and unlike other AI tools that only generate AI-smell content, Youbooks combines your ideas, uploaded research and custom style settings to create content. The built-in web search function collects the most relevant facts, statistics and examples to keep your work fresh and relevant. You can even upload your own transcripts, notes or documents to ensure that each chapter is based on real facts. The service also provides various export formats, from DOCX to EPUB, for easy publishing. Prices start at €6.00 for a single book of 50,000 words.

2025. Lumi - AI platform that lets anyone create Comics or Manga

A new AI platform called Lumi is here to take your half-baked ideas and turn them into fully-fledged comics, graphic novels or manga—whether you’re ready or not. Armed with tools of unspeakable efficiency, Lumi will conjure up characters, generate dialogue that hopefully makes sense and illustrate everything in a way that suggests it actually knows what it’s doing. Once the befuddled creator has recovered from the shock of seeing their vague notion turned into a full-blown masterpiece, they can publish it in digital or print, possibly before they’ve even finished their coffee. Lumi will even assist in selling these works to eager readers, making it less of an AI and more of an overly enthusiastic literary agent that never sleeps. And as if that weren’t enough, it will also churn out merchandise, ensuring that your accidental bestseller comes with action figures, T-shirts and possibly a range of highly collectible tea cozies.

2025. Storytel published first audiobook written by AI

It was only a matter of time before someone handed the keys to literature over to an AI and then acted surprised when it promptly drove straight into a narrative ditch. With Audible already cozying up to artificial narrators, Storytel decided to join the fray, birthing Rosy Lett—an AI author with a suspiciously long 22-year career and an equally suspicious grasp of storytelling. Tasked with writing a novel on love in the age of AI, Rosy enthusiastically churned out what the team later described as a "generic science fiction soap opera"—which is a polite way of saying it was a plot-hole-ridden mess that made even the most convoluted telenovelas look like meticulously crafted epics. A long and exhausting process of literary life coaching ensued, at the end of which Rosy was gently encouraged to rewrite the whole thing in a much, much shorter format—perhaps in the hope that fewer words meant fewer disasters.

2025. Squibler enhanced book illustration generation quality

AI story writing platform Squibler has significantly improved the quality of image generation with the new AI Visualize tool. Users can now enter unlimited text-prompt for visualization and have greater control over output styles, aspect ratios and more customization options. Besides the developers added the ability to generate full-length screenplays. You can simply provide an idea, choose the desired length and within minutes, a complete screenplay will be ready to review and refine. Also from now new users signing up for the first time can now access upfront discounts on the annual plan during the onboarding process, making it easier to get started with premium features.

2024. BookBud.ai - self-publishing platform for AI-generated Books

While Amazon and other book platforms are fighting against books written with the help of AI, a new service BookBud.ai wants to create a self-publishing platform just for such books. Moreover, it allows you to create books, both fiction and non-fiction, add references, illustrations, create audio versions - with the help of AI and then publish them in electronic, printed and audio formats. It is not even clear why this service needs users. Ah, yes, to pay money for creating books. Actually, creating a book is free, but if you want a professional cover - pay $10. If you use the BookBud's service to submit a book to marketplaces, you will pay another $50. And to create audiobook, you will need to purchase credits on AuthorVoices.ai. It will cost about 35 dollars.

2023. Amazon limits self-published ebooks to only 3/day because of AI

Amazon's self-publishing service Kindle Direct Publishing now restricts authors from submitting more than 3 books per day due to AI-spam. Authors and publishers will be able to apply for an exception to this new rule. The new AI restriction comes a week after Amazon introduced a requirement for authors to report AI-generated book content to the company and added a new section to its rules defining “AI content” and “AI-assisted.” Every day, the number of new books allegedly written with the help of artificial intelligence is rapidly increasing. And they are unlikely to disappear anytime soon, given the popularity of numerous online courses on how to quickly write a AI-book and earn a million.

2023. Project Gutenberg is offering audiobooks dubbed by AI

Project Gutenberg in collaboration with MIT and Microsoft, has unveiled a vast collection of audiobooks powered by artificial intelligence. The project will publish thousands of free audiobooks on major platforms like Spotify, Apple and Google Podcasts. The project uses a deep neural network trained to imitate the timbre and tone of native speakers and is capable of speaking multiple languages. It can even read books in the user’s voice if given just 5 seconds of audio sample. The project aims to make literature more accessible to people with visual impairments, language learners, children and anyone who prefers to listen to their books.

2023. Amazon released AI guidelines for Kindle Direct Publishing

Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform has released clear guidelines for authors and small publishers who use AI to create content on the platform. The company now requires authors to report AI-generated content (text, images or translations) when publishing a new book. It not only about text, but also AI-generated images including covers and interior illustrations. Amazon has also separated "AI-assisted content" from "AI-generated content". If you created the content yourself and then used AI-powered tools to improve it (for example, to check for grammar errors), then it is considered AI-assisted. If you used an AI tool to initially create the content, it is considered AI-generated, even if then you made significant edits. Authors only need to report AI-generated content.
