Kindle Paperwhite
Kindle Paperwhite remains the best choice for most readers thanks to its excellent price-performance ratio. It features a crisp 7-inch display with a 300 ppi resolution and adjustable warm backlighting, on which text appears sharp and perfectly rendered, almost like ink on paper. The fast processor ensures smooth page turns and more fluid navigation, even when reading large PDFs and illustrated novels. The battery life lasts up to 12 weeks. Its thin case with IPX8 water resistance and light weight make it convenient for travel and commuting. Kindle Paperwhite is available in both Wi-Fi and cellular versions.

Kobo Touch
This was the first Kobo's model with touchscreen, that gave the name Touch. It's a simple 6-inch lightweight reader with 800 x 600 resolution, 16-level grey scale, 2Gb storage, SD card and travel friendly design. It still uses the newest Kobo firmware (if you want it), allows buing books via Wi-Fi, downloading epub files and copy paste into memory. It's battery life is about 1 month and you can replace the battery (purchase it cheaply on AlieExpress). The main drawback - it does not have frontlight. The model is discontinued of course.

2013. Amazon announced new faster Kindle Paperwhite

The second-generation Kindle Paperwhite will be priced the same as its predecessor — starting at $119 for the Wi-Fi version with ads — and features a higher-contrast screen, improved lighting and a quicker processor. It also includes several software enhancements that might eventually be available for older Kindles: Kindle PageFlip (allows readers to browse through a book without losing their place), Vocabulary Builder (enables users to test themselves on words they had to look up while reading) and Smart Lookup (provides comprehensive dictionary definitions along with additional reference information about a word, character, topic, or book through X-Ray and Wikipedia). The new Kindle Paperwhite is set to begin shipping on September 30.
