Kindle Create vs Vellum

February 11, 2026 | Author: Laura Candler
Kindle Create and Vellum are both desktop software for creating and formatting ebooks. They are aimed at authors without XML-coding skills - allow to import Word documents, select one of ready-made cover and page templates, add a a table of contents and navigation and export the book to a format compatible with Kindle Direct Publishing and other self-publishing platforms.

Kindle Create, however, is a free program from Amazon for Windows and macOS. It's natively integrated with KDP but not compatible with other platforms (it only exports to KPF format). It is suitable for creating simple text and educational books, as it offers a limited selection of templates and limited control over fine-tuning the design.

Vellum is a paid app that only works on macOS. It's very popular among fiction authors due to its user-friendly visual interface with instant previews. Vellum offers a wide range of beautiful templates and styles, the ability to fine-tune chapter design and decorative elements and can export to ePub and PDF (for printing).
