Kavita and Librum are both open-source software for managing digital book library. They support various file formats (EPUB, PDF, comics), offer catalog organization features (collections, tags, sorting) and interface customization. Both can run on Windows, Mac and Linux (using a Docker container) and enable access to books and library in a local network via a browser.
Kavita, however, is a purely self-hosted library focused on comics/manga (CBZ and CBR formats), with special reading modes such as "webtoon," "dual page". It automatically scans server folders, extracts metadata from files and creates smart collections (though it requires specific folder structure and metadata formatting to ensure proper indexing of the library). Kavita is designed for multi-user environments: you can create multiple accounts and set access rights. The basic version is free, but there is also Kavita+, a paid version with advanced functionality.
Librum is a universal library manager (not focused on comics) with a web reader. It supports more formats, including TIFF, MOBI, XPS. It has more user-friendly interface with flexible customization of themes, reading modes, folder organization. Librum has built-in AI features, such as the ability to highlight text and request an explanation via chatbot. Librum is free but also offers a paid online service based on its engine with cloud storage, book/reading progress syncing across devices and a catalog of free books (over 70,000).
