Kavita vs audiobookshelf

Kavita vs audiobookshelf are both opens-source ebook servers that can be deployed locally on your server or VPS. They provide a web interface for access via a browser, but also support work via mobile apps or PWA. Both systems can parse metadata from books/audiobooks, provide library management tools, organization and search functions and allow integration with external players/readers.

But Kavita is a system primarily focused on reading comics, manga and books. It supports formats such as (CBZ, CBR, EPUB, PDF, etc.). There is also support for MP3, M4B audiobooks, but only basic. For regular books, there is a convenient reader with adjustable display settings. Kavita's library interface is better in my opinion, but it is optimized for bookshelves with regular book covers, not audio CDs. Kavita has a more flexible organization of books by series, volumes, arcs and provides significantly better metadata support for printed publications.

audiobookshelf is a program designed for audiobooks in MP3, M4B and other formats. It does not have a reader for regular books, but has a suitable player with bookmarks and playback speed control. It remembers your playback progress and synchronizes it between devices. audiobookshelf can automatically extract covers and metadata from audio files and has an API for integration with other applications. In audiobookshelf, data streaming to the device works faster, which is important for listening to audiobooks.
