Calibre and VitalSource Bookshelf are both library management and e-book reading software. They allow you to visualize your library as a virtual bookshelf, organize books by various parameters (authors, formats, genres, subjects, years, etc.), filter and sort book lists, quickly find the needed book and open it for viewing or reading, set bookmarks and search in text, import and export book lists to share them.

Calibre, however, is a desktop (offline) program for Windows, Linux and Mac designed for creating a personal home library of ebooks. It is free and open-source software that is expandable with plugins and automation scripts. It supports a huge number of formats (EPUB, MOBI, PDF, etc.), allows you to convert books between formats, sync with modile eReaders, remove DRM protection, edit metadata, book text and covers.

VitalSource Bookshelf is an online platform that allows educational institutions to create a library and distribute books, textbooks and educational content among students. The system is installed on an internet server and can be accessed via standard browser, including from mobile devices. It features a built-in authorization and account creation system, the ability to purchase and rent books, support for annotation and collaboration tools, cloud-based synchronization of notes and reading progress. The system primarily works with EPUB and PDF books and textbooks protected by DRM.
