BibDesk vs JabRef
February 28, 2026 | Author: Laura Candler
BibDesk and JabRef are both free, open-source programs for managing bibliographies in BibTeX format. They support LaTeX projects, can import and export .bib files, contain search and filtering tools, support autocomplete and field validation, work with PDF articles and store references to them.
However, BibDesk is a macOS-only program, deeply integrated with the Apple ecosystem. It uses the native macOS interface, supports autocomplete via online databases (such as arXiv), has a built-in PDF viewer and supports smart reference groups.
JabRef is a cross-platform program (written in Java) that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It integrates with third-party LaTeX editors, supports connections to various online and local SQL databases, features tools for bulk editing and supports the BibLaTeX format.
