Barnes & Noble Press (formerly NOOK Press) is B&N's self-publishing platform, which allows to sell books to Nook e-readers and app users, as well as print versions in B&N bookstores in the United States. The latter option is more attractive, as the Nook e-reader platform is no longer very popular. B&N Press is available to authors in only a dozen countries and is slow to review books. Authors receive 70% royalties on e-book sales, regardless of the book's price, and 55% of the retail price of a printed book after printing costs. There is a minimum retail price, depending on the length of the printed book, the color options chosen and the cover type. Barnes & Noble (for a fee) promotes books through its extensive mailing list and runs special sales and promotions.

Platform for publishing own books in Amazon Kindle - the largest bookstore, which accepts wide range of categories (fiction, business, children's books, comics, romance, etc.). Amazon takes a 30% commission on book sales, or 65% if the book is not within the recommended price range. For paperback books, the commission of KDP is approximately 40% of the price after deducting printing costs. Publishing a book is quite simple and takes only a few minutes - for formatting the file and adding metadata/pricing. KDP provides authors with free and simple self-publishing tools, giving them control over their book's content, design, price, audience and advertising. Authors retain ownership of their content and can make changes to their book at any time. Authors can also participate in the Kindle Unlimited subscription server and receive royalties for every page read.

2023. Kindle Direct Publishing Launches ebooks to audiobooks using AI Voices

Kindle Direct Publishing has launched a tool for authors that allows them to create an audio version of their book using Text-To-Speech. The author can choose the voice and some settings. The author can also set the price from $3.99 to $14.99 and receive 40% of the royalties. After publication, the audiobook will be available for 72 hours (on Kindle and Audible). Audiobooks created using virtual voice will be labeled and like with any other audiobook, buyers will be able to listen a fragment. Amazon says that this service will allow authors to save thousands of dollars that would normally be required to hire professional narrators, voice actors and sound engineers to create an audiobook.
2014. Nook Press self-publishing platform is now available in Europe

Barnes and Noble, the bookseller behind the Nook e-reader devices and digital store, has announced that the Nook Press self-publishing platform (formerly limited to the US) is now accessible to authors and publishers in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. As part of this expansion, Nook Press now supports multiple languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish and Dutch – and authors will be paid in their local currencies, the company confirmed. So, despite declining revenues, Nook executives continue to strive to grow the business.
