Atticus vs Vellum

February 13, 2026 | Author: Laura Candler
Atticus and Vellum are both programs for editing, formatting and preparing ebooks for publication on Amazon KDP and other self-publishing platforms. Both are designed for authors without xml-coding skills, provide ready-made templates, automate table of contents and chapter numbering and support export to popular formats (EPUB, MOBI, PDF).

However, Atticus is a cross-platform program, available on Windows, macOS, Linux and online in the browser. It's more suitable for authors who want a turnkey solution: it offers built-in writing tools and a more flexible export and editing system. Furthermore, a subscription or one-time purchase is cheaper than Vellum.

Vellum is available only on macOS and is considered the industry standard among authors in the Apple ecosystem. It features a very simple and intuitive interface and provides very stable operation without any lag. Like Apple's system itself, Vellum focuses on design and contains only professionally curated templates. However, it has fewer writing tools and a higher price, especially when purchasing the eBook + Print package.
