Atticus vs Scrivener

February 13, 2026 | Author: Laura Candler
Atticus and Scrivener are both software book writers. They feature built-in note-taking and planning tools, allow you to divide and organize long texts by chapter, character and scene and can export manuscripts in various formats for self-publishing.

However, Atticus is a modern web app that runs in the Chrome browser. This makes it a fully cross-platform application that works on PC, Mac, Linux and mobile devices. Your data is stored on the online server, but you can also work offline - data syncs automatically when the connection appears. This scheme also enables collaboration between multiple authors. Overall, the program has a modern, minimalist interface and is easier to learn for beginning authors. Atticus exports are focused on publishing and formatting on Amazon KDP, but it can also output books in standard EPUB and PDF formats.

Scrivener is a desktop application for Mac and Windows, plus an iOS app that can sync with desktop versions via Dropbox. So, with Scrivener, you don't need an internet connection and you don't share your content with anyone (except Dropbox, if you choose). Overall, Scrivener has far more features, advanced content organization system, powerful layout and structure options. However, this comes at the cost of a more complex interface and setup takes more time. The program is better suited for screenplays, academic writing and long fiction books.
