Atticus vs Kindle Create
March 04, 2026 | Author: Laura Candler
Atticus and Kindle Create are both programs for formatting books before publication on self-publishing platforms. They allow to covert manuscripts into various ebook formats, structure chapters and table of contents (without the need for typesetting skills), preview the book before publication and find/fix errors.
But Atticus is a paid cross-platform application that works on Windows, macOS and in the browser. It's a combination of a text editor and formatting tool in one interface, suitable both for creating electronic books (for various self-publishing platforms) and for printed ones. It offers a set of ready-made design themes, provides tools for planning and organizing manuscripts.
Kindle Create is a free app from Amazon designed only for preparing books for Kindle Direct Publishing platform. It focuses on formatting already finished texts (rather than on writing), exports files in KPF format for uploading to KDP. The program works best with documents imported from MS Word
